STORYLINE:

In a tension-filled day at the Church of the Nativity compound in Bethlehem, Israeli troops shot two Palestinians inside, killing one, and two more Palestinians walked out with hands raised, surrendering to Israeli troops.

Israelis and Palestinians renewed negotiations on Wednesday evening in an effort to end the three-week standoff at the site of Jesus' traditional birthplace.

But the meeting, held just a few paces from the church at the Bethlehem Peace Centre, was preceded by a brief gunbattle as the negotiators were entering the building.

Afterward, one of the Palestinian negotiators and a priest emerged from the church, carrying a badly wounded man on a stretcher.

At one point, the bloodied man fell to the ground. He was taken to a Jerusalem hospital, but died a short time later.

The trouble started on Wednesday morning after Israeli snipers shot and wounded a Palestinian man inside the compound. He was then evacuated to hospital.

Hours later two Palestinians walked out of the church to surrender to Israeli forces.

The pair, who were wearing civilian clothing, emerged with their hands raised and pulled up their shirts to reveal that they were not carrying explosives, before being searched by Israeli soldiers.

A Palestinian journalist, who reportedly recognised the men, said they were members of the Palestinian police force.

The men were the latest to exit the church compound, where around 200 armed Palestinians and several dozen others have been holed up since April 2, when they entered to escape advancing Israeli troops.

The men said they had surrendered because they were unwell.

In the Jabalya refugee camp near Gaza City on Wednesday, three Palestinians were killed by an explosion inside a house.

According to Palestinian witnesses, the house belonged to an activist, Said Mabhouh.

Palestinian officials declined to comment, while the Israeli military said it had no operations in the area.
