They're like goblins in a way, except in space and with a lot more magic.

The ethereals originate from the planet K'aresh, a formerly arid world within the Great Dark Beyond. At one point, the world was invaded by the void lord Dimensius the All-Devouring, who opened countless gateways into the void and the Twisting Nether, bathing K'aresh in arcane and dark energies. One of the mortal races of the world used their technology to construct magical barriers around their cities, but only succeeded in stopping the void energies. The arcane tore away their bodies and infused their souls with power, and this race, now called the ethereals, took to binding themselves with cloth in order to survive. This also boosted their knowledge and magical abilities, however, allowing the ethereals to fight back against Dimensius. Over time, however, Dimensius summoned armies of his fellow void creatures, forcing the ethereals to flee into the Twisting Nether.

The ethereals are driven by trade and economics, and, as such, their political structures are also centered around nexus princes. Originally, all of the nexus princes were united in a council under Nexus-King Salhadaar in what became known as the Ethereum. However, over time, the Ethereum turned into a radical military organization obsessed with avenging the destruction of K'aresh; as a result, many nexus princes left and formed their own organizations.

It was revealed later on that the true goal of the radical Ethereum was to, quote "become void". As such, they used the void energies within Netherstorm to bind it with their own, transforming those who do so into nexus-stalkers. While otherwise similar to typical ethereals, they are considered to be aberrations by others of their kind and posess the ability to drain their enemies' power. Eventually, the operation was destroyed, along with Nexus-King Salhadaar by the Protectorate, an ethereal organization formed in reaction to the excesses of the Ethereum.
#4:
The Ethereum atempted to ally with the blue dragonflight during the Nexus War. In return for their assistance, Malygos had promised the ethereals access to the blue dragonflight's treasures within the Nexus. While the alliance seems to have not come into effect, as the Ethereum did not actually assist the dragons in the war, the ethereals, later on, came to Azeroth to collect their part of the bargain. They took advantage of the blue dragonflight abandoning the Nexus in order to try to plunder it, and to use its surge needles to call up void energies from the Twisting Nether. They were eventually stopped by the blue dragon Azuregos and an adventurer.
