Large, heavy, luxurious barges with big engines are still the finest mode of transportation in my book. Some people call them wasteful; I think it’s wasteful to drive a Prius and cry yourself to sleep at night.

However, I was utterly undecided which one was the best. The Lincoln Navigator has a beautiful, stylish interior but an underpowered V6 engine. Meanwhile, Cadillac offers powerful V8 engines but lacks the classy interior that the Navigator offers. But, the third of the Big Three comes to save the day with an all-new offering: the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I mean, the Wagoneer Grand Wagoneer. Apparently, it’s its own brand now.

Getting over my initial disappointment about the lack of woodgrain paneling, let’s take a look at what Mopar has to offer in the largest class of SUVs. Also: drinking game; take a shot every time I say “Wagoneer” in this video.

First, let’s clear something up.

In this video we’ll not only focus on the Grand Wagoneer, but we’ll also look at what sets the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer apart. First of all, both come with a Hemi V8, one of the best engines in the market. And for the Grand Wagoneer, the 6.4L version is standard. 6.4L V8 vs. Lincoln’s 3.6L V6, I know what I want to pull the weight of my giant SUV and trailer combo. The regular Wagoneer comes standard with a 5.7L V8 engine.
The 6.4-liter Hemi in the Grand Wagoneer produces 470 horsepower and a whopping 455 pound-feet of torque, while the Wagoneer’s 5.7-liter delivers 392 horsepower and 404 pound-feet of torque. Lastly, the Grand Wagoneer can be optioned with a 3-liter inline six engine, delivering up to 510 horsepower and a torque of 500 pound-feet on premium fuel. Although these are impressive numbers, the V8 performed more smoothly and doesn’t require high octane fuel. This, combined with the improved longevity of a V8, makes the Hemi our engine of choice for this SUV.

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer come in multiple trim levels, starting with the Series I and going up to the Series III, which offers every luxury available on the model.

One of the best surprises in the Grand Wagoneer is its ride. Jeep’s new SUV is built on the platform of the RAM 1500 truck and those familiar with the newest generation will know that’s not a bad thing. It’s a solid platform and the already comfy ride has been greatly refined for the Grand Wagoneer. What we liked a lot about this SUV is the great emphasis on comfort. It has comfy suspension which makes it feel like a true traditional American luxury vehicle and the cabin is very well-isolated which adds to the premium luxury feel. The SUV does feel very large, but the big V8 gets this machine from 0 to 60 in 6 seconds. Which is seriously fast considering the size and weight of the Grand Wagoneer.

If you prefer a sportier ride, the SUV features five driving modes; Auto, Sport, Snow, Rock, and Sand/Mud. The magnetic suspension will automatically adapt to the selected mode and the road surface and conditions. And this is a true Jeep, including 4WD drivetrain and a suspension that can be raised or lowered, which probably makes it the most offroad-capable full-size SUV currently on the market. The Grand Wagoneer can even be lowered by pressing a special button on the key fob for easier access.

We love that the designers of the Grand Wagoneer didn’t try to make it look small. It’s got a very masculine, square shape which not only looks commanding, but also gives it even more interior space. It also distinctly sets it apart from the crossovers that are flooding the roads these days. The front of the Grand Wagoneer is slanted forward, in line with Jeep’s new styling that debuted in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. An interesting design choice is the black roof, which makes the SUV look almost as if it has no roof at all. It sets it clearly apart from the Wagoneer with its regular roof appearance.

The overall square look of the SUV continues in the tail lamps. Those are sequential in the Grand Wagoneer, while the regular Wagoneer just gets regular blinkers. What’s even more cool than sequential blinkers though, is the patterns when you lock and unlock the Grand Wagoneer. Definitely worth the extra 20 grand. Standard wheels on the Grand Wagoneer are 20”, with 22” as an available option.

The Grand Wagoneer invites you in with illuminated door handles and power running boards.

Another nice convenience is the touchless entry to the rear liftgate. Keyless entry unlocks the doors simply by touching the handles.

Now, this wouldn’t be a Jeep if the design weren’t full of easter eggs.
Jeep is proud of its American roots and it screams Merica!
