When your kid was little, did you have any family traditions? Whether it was walking to school together, taking trips to your favorite library or playground, making pizza every Thursday, or cooking Christmas dinner together every year, you probably had some routines, habits, and traditions that were unique to your family. But now that your kid is a teenager, you've probably realized those traditions aren’t quite as appealing to your teenager as they used to be. It's possible that your teenager has already ruined any hope you once had for making fun family memories together. Maybe they've refused to participate, ditched you for their friends, or told you how lame and boring your beloved family traditions are. But traditions are powerful! Family traditions have the power to give teenagers a much-needed sense of safety, belonging, and identity, so don't give up on them just yet! Here’s an idea. Instead of trying to force your teenagers to keep up with the traditions they used to like as kids, what if you said something like: "Okay, I know you're outgrowing our old family traditions, but I really love making memories with you. What if you and I came up with some new traditions together?" The traditions we practice have the ability to bind us together, to create new memories with the people we love, and to remind us of the memories we’ve already shared. So start a new family tradition this year, and make your time together as a family really count.
