Описание к видео Emery County History Society Victorian & Pioneer Burial Customs 2025 Oct. 16 by Bernice Payne

Presentation by Bernice Payne--Victorian and Pioneer Burial Customs, just in time for Family History Month and Halloween!

For 30 minutes before the meeting, David Prettyman from Wellington, Utah, played his guitar and sang country songs, and several times elsewhere during the meeting.

Bernice presented the monthly meeting for the Emery History Society, celebrating both Family History month and Halloween. She included in her presentation a YouTube video (https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/...) and a PPT presentation from photos she took years ago during a graveyard tour in the St. Louis Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as others she has collected from interesting headstone epitaphs. She delighted the audience with inside information about many sayings in use today that originated in burial customs, particularly during the Victorian Era.

Bernice is passionate about Family History. She and her husband, Val, have worked at the Utah State Archives for over 20 years, conducting cemetery research. She especially likes researching the "ghost town" cemeteries and has had some rather miraculous happenings.

Bernice Payne was born in Price and raised in Cleveland, Utah, the oldest of four children. “My parents ran the Cleveland store attached to our home. My friends thought I was lucky because I could get candy and ice cream any time I wanted--they were wrong! I loved riding horses but didn't have one of my own until high school.”

Bernice loves music and plays several instruments. She graduated from UVU with a degree in Secretarial Science and Business. She said, “I am a voracious reader, especially of history, the Civil War, and slavery, to name just a few. Being involved with the Emery County Historical Society for many years taught me much about our wonderful county and its many treasures.”
