Three Simple Rules for Adding and Subtracting Integers | Grammar Hero's Free ASVAB/PiCAT Tutoring

In this video, I discuss how to add and subtract integers (i.e., positive and negative whole numbers), and in addition, I work out several practice problems. In order to do well on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), you must be comfortable solving problems that are similar to the ones in this video.

Rule 1: When adding ONE POSITIVE AND ONE NEGATIVE, ignore
the signs and subtract the numbers. The sign of the number
with the larger absolute value is the sign of the answer.

Rule 2: When adding TWO NEGATIVE NUMBERS, ignore the signs
and add the numbers. The answer will be negative.

Rule 3: SUBTRACTION MEANS ADD THE OPPOSITE. So, change the
subtraction sign to an addition sign and then change the sign of the second number to its opposite. Now, follow the rules for adding integers (i.e., Rule 1 and Rule 2).
