These days it is extremely easy to generate huge volumes of data from our automated systems. This leads to a tendency to develop and track metrics on just about everything. But oftentimes this volume of data actually serves to cloud or distort the very picture of the business we were hoping to measure. Vanity metrics are those that we track because we can, or because we think they have meaning, but in reality, our metrics must be selected for how well they correlate to our business objectives. A few highly correlated metrics are worth more than dashboard after dashboard of these vanity metrics.
