 What is Posterior cruciate ligament (#PCL) avulsion?

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion is a specific kind of knee avulsion fracture and the most prevalent solitary PCL injury. This often entails varying degrees of separation of the PCL's posterior tibial insertion.

 Causes of Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion?

• Dashboard Injury
• Falling on knee
• Twisting injury
• Hyperextension injury

 Diagnosis?

To check associated neurovascular injury your doctor must check the following conditions:
• Vascular status
• Neurological status
• X-Ray
• MRI
• CT

 Treatment?

Treatment is determined by grading of the Avulsion.

Type 1: Un-displaced fracture- This can be treated by conservative treatment by supporting knee brace.

Type 2: Up to 2mm of displacement fracture- This can be treated conservatively and operation is not needed. Treatment can be done by supporting knee brace with posterior calf support. Rest for 4 weeks followed by exercise.

Type 3: Completely displaced fracture- For this type an arthroscopic surgery (key hole surgery) is needed. The damaged area is fixed with suture loop and screw and Rest for few weeks followed by exercise is needed.
