In this video we discuss Trait theories of leadership. We touch upon the following points to create a better understanding of the theories:

• Theories that consider personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leader from non-leader.
• e.g. Indra Gandhi: Confident, iron-willed, determined and decisive (pivotal, key decision making)
• Focus on personal qualities and characteristics
• Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, Azim Prem Ji are charismatic, enthusiastic and courageous.
• Research , 1930-1960, 20 studies: 80 traits

1990s: seven traits differentiates leaders and non-leaders:
• Ambition and energy
• Intelligence
• Desire to lead
• Job relevant knowledge
• Honesty and Integrity
• High self-monitoring (adjustment in behavior according to situation)
• Self-confidence

Extroversion is most important trait of effective leaders.
• Extroversion is more strongly related to leader emergence than to leader effectiveness.

Trait can predict leadership. Traits can predict emergence of leadership, appearance of leadership, but cannot distinguish between effective and ineffective leaders.
