Coco Loco is probably Cartagena's most famous drink. It is rum (and I found out whiskey) served inside of a fresh coconut shell. It is delicious and deadly and one of the must-try things to do when visiting Cartagena.

this drink is sold to tourists for about $7USD each, but prices vary depending on how much they think they can get from you. Always negotiate the price, but expect to pay around $15.000 COP (colombian pesos).

If you want to make this drink yourself, this video basically shows you just how it is made. Or how Juanita makes it. Each bartender is different, but Juanita's was far better than the Coco Loco I had last time i was in Cartagena. Want to know the ingredients?

Cut off the top of a chilled coconut, making sure all the natural juice stays inside
Add a bit of coconut syrup/nectar (basically condensed natural coconut juice)
Add lots of whiskey
Add even more dark rum
Add a little white rum (not shown in this video, Juanita seemed to opt for extra whiskey and dark rum in mine)
Cherry juice (which she calls "fresa" which means "strawberries" but it was maraschino cherry juice)
Mix
Add fruit to top
Serve

That is it. I was under the impression there was a lot more juice and a lot less alcohol, but I was wrong. It's a strong drink that can easily be shared with friends.

I love Coco Loco.
