On Februrary 20, 1967, George Martin wanted to create a circus atmosphere for the track, yet no suitable instrument was found so he instead searched the EMI tape library for the desired sound. With sounds containing calliopes and steam organs, he processed the foot-long tapes into bits that Geoff Emerick threw into the air to then reassemble it into a random sequence that is played throughout the later half of the track.
