Merz visit to China is now the latest edition in a wave of western leaders like Macron, Starmer, Carny and others, wanting to renew ties with China. After years of China bashing, European leaders are compelled to visit China, face a real reckoning.

Merz has pushed this visit away for a long time, but now fact is that he has to face the music. There is now a real reckoning coming for the German economy, because of 3 intertwined shocks: loss of cheap Russian energy,, mounting bureaucracy in Europe, and intense competition from China in sectors where Germany was traditionally very strong.

Now, there is a lot more to this visit than reported in the press. In fact I would argue that Merz's visit contrary to Macron’s visit has the potential to really reset European-China relations, but only if Europe really commits to it, which of course is highly questionable, vassalized as they are to the Americans..
