A political analyst believes the balance of power inside the Senate could still shift overnight because some members of the new majority could switch sides.

Political analyst Ronald Llamas said that while new Senate President Tito Sotto and Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chairman Sen. Panfilo Lacson could be “uncompromising” in the fight against corruption, they would need to strike a balance because of the composition of the majority.

“‘Yung majority kasi maliit lang. 15 ang majority, 3 dun hindi mo sigurado. ‘Yung isa kapatid ni Alan Peter Cayetano. ‘Yung dalawa dun na last minute sumama ay dalawang Villar. Siyempre gusto nilang protektahan ang kanilang mga negosyo. Pag nawala yung 3, hindi ka na majority,” he told DZMM.

He said members of the minority still have friends with the majority and could negotiate for more committee chairmanships in the Upper Chamber.

The same cannot be said about the House leadership where any potential candidate for the Speakership must be able to handle all 350 members via political and other suasions, he said.

“Merong sumubok these past few days pero walang numero. Kailangan mo ng 190 hanggang 200 para makuha ‘yung Speakership,” he said.

In the interview, Llamas backed the creation of an independent commission to investigate the flood control controversy but noted the probe could take time. "Sobrang dami ng corruption. You have to start somewhere," he said.
