Dr. Orlando Pérez spoke about the security landscape in Latin America. He discussed the role of institutions like the armed forces and police in Latin America. He ended the discussion talking about the impact of the events in Venezuela on the reputation of the United States in terms of alliances and soft power.


Bio:
Dr. Orlando J. Pérez served as Dean of the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of North Texas at Dallas (2019-2023). Previously (2014-2019) he served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences at Millersville University of Pennsylvania. He served as a Professor of Political Science, Director, Cultural and Global Studies Programs and Chairperson in the Department of Political Science at Central Michigan University (1998-2014). His teaching and research interests include comparative politics, Latin American politics, U.S.-Latin American relations, civil-military relations, public opinion and empirical democratic theory. He taught Democracy & Governance for the MPA program at the FHR Lim A Po Institute for Social Studies in Paramaribo, Suriname. He received his B.A. in political science from Florida International University and a Masters and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pittsburgh. He has carried out field research in Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, and Venezuela. As a consultant, he has worked on public opinion surveys, democratization, civil-military relations, and anti-corruption issues for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the UN Development Program. He is a recipient of a grant from the United States Institute of Peace for his project studying the transformation of civil-military relations in post-authoritarian Central America. He was a member of the Scientific Support Group for the Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) at Vanderbilt University and directed the Americas Barometer survey in Panama. His current research focuses on civil-military relations in Latin America, crime and security issues in Central America, political behavior in Latin America, as well as survey research on democratic political culture.
