This is the final lecture of the academic year, in which we put both tide gauges and satellite altimeters together, to the task of monitoring sea level variations. The differences between both techniques is highlighted. As of today, the analysis of tide gauge and satellite altimeters observations provide global (mean) sea level linear trends of, respectively, +1.8 mm/y and +3.1 mm/yr, with no statistically significant acceleration. Tide gauges and satellite altimeters provide different aspects of the same phenomenon, with satellite altimeters being capable of sensing sea level rise in the middle of oceans, whereas tide gauges are restricted to the coast lines. Results from both techniques also indicate the variability of sea level rise. For example, analysis of satellite altimeter data show a spatial variation in linear trends, ranging from zero to +6 mm/yr, the largest value in a few areas in the middle of the Pacific and Indian oceans.
