"Crime and Punishment" is a psychological and philosophical novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, first published in 1866. It explores themes of morality, guilt, redemption, and the nature of justice through the mind of its troubled protagonist.

Rodion Raskolnikov, a poor and disillusioned ex-law student living in St. Petersburg, believes that some individuals possess the right to commit crimes if it serves a greater good. Convinced of this theory, he murders a greedy old pawnbroker—whom he sees as a parasite on society—and her innocent sister who happens to witness the crime.

After the murder, Raskolnikov spirals into intense psychological torment. Though he initially avoids suspicion, he becomes consumed by guilt, paranoia, and mental anguish. His erratic behavior draws the attention of the cunning detective Porfiry Petrovich, who suspects him but plays a patient psychological game rather than arresting him outright.

Along the way, Raskolnikov becomes involved with Sonya Marmeladov, a humble and devout young woman forced into prostitution to support her family. Her compassion, suffering, and faith begin to influence him profoundly.

Eventually, torn apart by inner conflict and Sonya’s guidance, Raskolnikov confesses to the murders. He is sentenced to a Siberian labor camp, and Sonya follows him there. In the novel’s epilogue, there is a hint that Raskolnikov, through suffering and Sonya’s love, begins the path to spiritual redemption.
