Stuart Townend wrote this hymn. When tells how the hymn came to him, he explains that he wanted to tell the story of Christ on the cross from the view of what it cost the Father to give His Son. He then came face to face with the reality of his own complicity in that process. Thinking of these two aspects of the personal viewpoint of the story of the cross, one easily comes face to face with the effect of the cross on the individual who truly appreciates it. Thinking about this context, I can't think of a hymn I know that expresses this message better.
