No matter what type of training you are doing, clear communication with your dog and precise timing of a reward is critical. For detection, the timing and delivery of the reward in relation to your dog smelling target odor can have significant impacts on the overall time it takes for your dog to make the connection and your success as you progress in complexity of tasks.

It simplifies the process and makes it more clear. The dog sniffs target odor, you click, and then deliver the reward. Additionally it allows you to be much more precise with your timing and you are able capture more of the exact behavior you want (while minimizing unwanted behavior), which is very handy when teaching an indication or TFR behavior.

Additionally using a clicker allows you to work at a greater distance from the dog, which can reduce the dog becoming dependent on you or overly influenced by you. You can also deliver the reward at a distance from target odor if needed. No more trying to run in so you can hold treats over the target odor, usually dropping food and contaminating things!

With many of our dogs who are motivated and like to work fast, our ability to precisely deliver the reward within 1 to 2 seconds of the dog performing the ideal behavior can be significantly challenging. If you are trying to throw their toy, what are the odds that you will have it land in the right place at the right time? If you are moving in to deliver at source, that may take far too long and now the dog is focusing on you instead of concentrating on the odor or right behavior.

But when you use a clicker…tada! you have significantly increased your skill and ability to be more precise and clear! You don’t need to worry about your throwing accuracy, you don’t need to try to be a track athlete and run to where the target odor is. You can simply move 1 finger! You don’t even need to necessarily move your feet!

Okay before you run out and start implementing the use of a clicker you have to teach your dog what the clicker means. AND this might be the biggest reason why many people start using a clicker and then say it doesn’t work!

How you teach your dog what the clicker means has a HUGE impact on its effective use in your training. You must pair the clicker with something your dog is VERY motivated for and finds rewarding. If you are pairing the click with something your dog doesn’t really want or won’t work very hard to get…of course you are likely to get poor results.
