Aankhein Kholo (open your eyes) is an attempt at making people understand the struggle many of us in the queer community face whereby our entire identity is turned into a matter of guilt and shame in the face of family image and egos. We often hear about struggles of the generation above in that the number of sacrifices they have made for us, but equally there are sacrifices that WE make, that often go unnoticed. We sometimes have to sever perfectly healthy relationships with close family members, because should they know about our queer identity our family will bear the brunt of shame, but in fact there is no need for us to sever those ties in the first place - this is just one example of the many sacrifices we make. It is time that non-supportive family, parents understand the harm this make-belief protection of "sharm (Shame)" causes. This is a poem I have dedicated to mother and father.
