What is the difference between audio compression and file compression?

If you are new to music, or have just always been confused about exactly what audio compression is, then this video is for you.

In this video, I break down the difference between audio compression and file compression and explain how both of these work.

Audio compressors work by reducing the peaks in and audio signal to create a more even performance, and then bringing the volume back up using make-up gain to return the track to a decent volume level.

File compression is the process of compressing the contents of a file to make the file size smaller. For audio files, this means creating MP3 or M4A files by removing sound from frequencies that cannot be heard by most listeners, resulting in a smaller file size. When mastering or releasing music, you always want to ensure you are using full resolution "lossless" files which do not have any compression.
