The 1989 Fuzz is a tribute to the unique glassy fuzztones that SRV was blasting out of his amps from the late 80s onward. Although a massive fan of the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, Stevie would face the same age-old instability issues of Germanium reacting to temperature changes. Inspired by the Diaz Texas Square Face that SRV settled on, the 1989 improves a classic circuit by using a High Gain Germanium (NTE 103) transistor paired with a Low Gain Silicon transistor. The result is a Hybrid Fuzz that produces that unmistakable glassy cleanup while still maintaining a vintage tone with fat sustain. The third knob or Wah-Wah Trick is a versatile control that helps Fuzz get along with any wah whether you like to place it before or after. Simply dial it back to avoid oscillation and restore the wah’s vocal like sweep. The Wah trick also expands on the available fuzz tones whether you use a Wah or not. The altered fuzz impedance allows you to tighten up the tone with humbuckers or enter cleaner fuzz textures with less fizz.
