Soils have internal architecture, which is called structure, and DeAnn Presley describes the different types of structure observed in different horizons in a soil pit. Soil structure is the arrangement of sand, silt, clay, and organic matter into bigger pieces. You can determine the shape of the structure by looking at the soil and also by breaking large pieces of soil with your hands and seeing how the pieces naturally break into smaller pieces along the cracks.
