Brettski adjusted his lucky cap, a faded green thing with a fraying brim, as he slid into a blackjack table at the casino. The plan was simple: use his “elevator blackjack” strategy to build a bankroll big enough to cover hours of slot machine play. It wasn’t about winning big, just staying even—slots were where the real fun was.

The dealer, a stoic woman with piercing eyes, dealt the first hand. Brettski glanced at his cards—9 and 7. Sixteen. Not ideal. The elevator strategy relied on disciplined bets and knowing when to walk. He tapped the table for a hit. A 5 slid across to him, making 21.

“Nice start,” he muttered, raking in the modest payout.

Over the next hour, Brettski’s stack of chips ebbed and flowed like waves at Del Mar, where he’d cheered on horses not long ago. Every win bolstered his resolve, and every loss made him doubt the strategy. At one point, he was down to his last $20 but clawed his way back with a clutch double-down on an 11.

He finally hit a rhythm, amassing a decent pile of chips. The slots were calling—flashing lights, spinning reels, jackpots waiting to pop. Brettski felt the familiar adrenaline surge. But just as he began to gather his winnings, the dealer dealt him a king and an ace. Blackjack.

He’d hit the table maximum, confident this was the last hand before heading to the slots. The dealer smiled faintly and flipped over her cards. An ace. Then a ten.

“Push,” the dealer said.

Brettski froze. His chips, his plan, all hung in the balance. Should he risk one more hand or cash out? His eyes darted to the slot machines glowing in the distance, their promises of easy riches whispering louder with every second.
