'Coolie' was first published in 1936 and its publication reinforced Mulk Raj Anand’s position as one of the leading English authors in India. Anand’s main concern had always been for ‘the creatures in the lower depths of Indian society who once were men and women: the rejected, who had no way to articulate their anguish against the oppressors.’ His novels of humanism have been translated into several languages. ‘Coolie’ revolves around a young orphan boy by the name of Munoo and his plight due to poverty and exploitation aided by the social and political structures of the time. Like much of his other work, this novel is concerned with the consequences of British Rule in India and with the rigid caste system that structured Indian society. Munoo, born in the Kangra Hills of Bilaspur, had lost his parents at a very early age and was reluctantly taken in by his relatives, who sent him off to Sham Nagar to earn his own living at about fourteen years of age. Munoo’s father was a farmer whose lands had been seized by the landlord and because the interest on the mortgage covering the unpaid rent had not been forthcoming when the rains had been scanty and the harvest was poor, the landlord had permanently taken his land. This explains the inhuman torture which the haves inflict upon the have-nots.
Coolie is a heart-wrenching account of the oppression and exploitation faced, not just by Munoo, but many of our fellow human beings. Anand shows how the racial and class distinctions imposed by British colonialism have magnified the existing caste system to make life a curse for “coolies”. Just because he is an orphan, low-born and poor, Munoo has to endure trials which no human being deserves to face in life. There are thousands of such people in our country today. It is our duty to help them in every way we can and rally public opinion to build a happier and just society for everyone.
