STORYLINE:
Peruvian authorities began on Friday the process of destroying forty-three thousand five-hundred weapons that are no longer being used, officials confirmed.
"Starting with today's action, a total of more than 40 thousand weapons will be destroyed - 35 thousand of them belonging to the national police," Peruvian Vice Minister of Interior Danilo Guevara told reporters at a news conference in Lima on Friday.
Guevara defined the process - which will until March 2008 - "a political decision.
"With a political decision, marked by a commitment to peace from the police institution, the arms are being destroyed and this process will last four months."
The majority of the weapons being destroyed belonged to Peru's police force while the rest were confiscated by authorities from illicit activities.
The weapons are being incinerated in massive ovens in the Peruvian capital Lima.
The process is being carried out in cooperation with the United Nations Regional Centre, as well as the financial contribution of the European Union, Great Britain, and Sweden, local media reported.
The initiative is in accordance with the Inter-American Convention Against the Manufacturing and Illegal Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives and Other Related Materials, which Peru joined in 2003.
