Retrieval refers to AI's ability to pull information from sources outside of its core training data. While early tools struggled, today all main AI tools leverage external retrieval via web search to gather and process current information. Additionally, internal retrieval allows users to input their own documents—such as transcripts from a semester's worth of classes—and use the AI to efficiently retrieve specific details, connections, or summaries from those private sources.
