What Is Beauty? Why It Matters.

This video is not about a hand-carved bowl...it is about an encouraging us to think differently about what beauty is. We need to reframe the talk we have around what personal beauty is. Our beauty is not what we apply to the outside of ourselves so that we can try and meet some artificial social construct that has been fed steroids through the IV of social networking apps. Beauty is the result of the inner characteristics of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control being mixed together with the uniqueness of every individual and then overflowing into the world around us. This is what true beauty really is…and it is all from the inside out…

I want to thank my friend who was willing to be honest in dealing with her insecurities in a public forum. Thanks for being authentic.

Remember to be the change you want to see.

There are a couple books that I have read recently that have influenced me and some of my thinking that shows up in this video. Some of their thoughts were new to me, but many simply reaffirmed and clarified many principles of life and love that I have believed for a long time. The first is "Big Magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert. I can freely recommend it to everyone. The second is "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**K". Be warned this second book is raw and filled with a fair amount of language that will be offensive to many. BUT, contrary to what you may think about the title, it is one of the best books on personal values and healthy relationships that I have read in many years.

The tools used in carving of this bowl were mostly Arbortech Power Carving tools: Power Carving Unit, Turbo Plane, Industrial Woodcarver, Mini-Turbo Carver, and Contour Sander.

The word list that I talk about that make up inner beauty (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) has been around for a long time. It was first penned by the apostle Paul to the church located in Galatia somewhere around 50 AD.
