The way that we design services is mostly based on a contract to a pre-defined set of criteria. This compliance approach seems effective, but it almost always creates unintended behaviours hiding the true nature of the work that is occurring.
Here we will uncover the basics of an alternative approach to rethinking measuring and evaluating, using a real example. Measurement and evaluation MEL or M&E systems change is based on a different paradigm - trust and learning. In this video John Mortimer and Roxanne Tandridge describe how measurement and the relationship can shift from being driven by compliance to standards and potentially driving fear of mis-compliance, to a curiosity-driven and shared learning relationship between managers, and those who the work on the front line.

In the public sector this approach is pioneered by Relational working, the vanguard method, and the liberated method. They are seen as alternatives to the traditional approach of New Public Management.
