Throughout the Second World War, there were a number of concentration camps where SS guards inflicted horror and suffering. One of the most brutal and horrific camps was Stutthof, which was found near to Danzig and here the guards were terrible in their treatment of prisoners. It's estimated that out of the 110,000 prisoners held inside of Stutthof's barbed wire fences, 65,000 never made it out alive. Guards such as Jenny Wanda Barkmann would later be executed for their horrific crimes on a huge gallows in Gdansk.

But as the Second World War was turning against the Germans, in January 1945 the order by the SS to evacuate Stutthof was given. Around 50,000 prisoners were marched out of the camps gates on a death march, where much execution and suffering occurred. Prisoners who could not keep up were executed at the side of the road, and they were forced to march hundreds of miles. Some were marched into the Baltic Sea where they were then executed. It's believed that the death march from Stutthof itself resulted in the deaths of 25,000 people.
