Sparing Nothing and No One: Climate Change and Nuclear Weapons

Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Democracy webinar on the twin existential threats of climate change and nuclear weapons. Panelists discuss how these perils are linked and how one might trigger the other and share ideas about how the climate justice and nuclear abolition movements might join forces to eliminate both threats.

Ira Helfand, MD is a member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapon, ICAN, the recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, and Past President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, the founding partner of ICAN and itself the recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. He is also co-Founder and Past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility, IPPNW’s US affiliate, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Back from the Brink campaign.

Dr. Jennifer Leaning is Senior Research Fellow at the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University and Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights, retired, at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Harvard Lakshmi Mittal Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University and of the Steering Committee of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes, based in Geneva.

Zia Mian is a physicist and co-director of Princeton University's Program on Science and Global Security (SGS), where he has worked since 1997. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, Mian is co-chair of the Scientific Advisory Group of the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and has served on the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. He is a co-founder and member of the steering committee of the Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction, and he serves on the board of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Molly McGinty is the Program Director with the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), where she coordinates the federation’s initiatives on the humanitarian and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons and advocates for their total abolition, primarily through the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). A strong believer in the power of grassroots movements, Molly works closely with IPPNW’s global affiliate network and partners, including the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and Youth for TPNW, to build a groundswell of support for nuclear disarmament. She was on the founding Steering Committee of Youth for TPNW, currently represents IPPNW on ICAN’s International Steering Group, and is a Board Member of the Nuclear Truth Project.
