For people wanting to know how to get the upgraded hell's retriever, go on to golden gate bridge by using the plane and only use the tomahawk for one round, making sure not to fire one bullet. When you've done this, go back to the main island and play through another round. Go to where the dog was (the floor underneath electric cherry) and on the opposite side of the dog where the gap in the floor is, there should bit a small circular lava pit at the bottom. Throw your tomahawk in there and then you need to go in to afterlife mode. The place where you got the hell's retriever from should be blue and allow you to equip the hell's redeemer. (Note you will only see the upgraded tomahawk when in afterlife mode but it will still be equipped when you revive yourself again.) :-)
