This video provides suggested validation procedures for Safe-T-Vue® (http://www.williamlabs.com/products) temperature indicators for blood products. Using this suggested validation procedure for Safe-T-Vue, three temperatures are measured and recorded while observing the indicator’s gradual change from white to red:
• When the white indicator first begins to show red spots
• When the indicator begins filling in with red
• When the indicator is completely red
The measurement and interpretation of the temperature-related color change for Safe-T-Vue consists of assuring a low enough starting temperature, use of temperature measuring instruments, and correct physical handling of the indicator.

About Safe-T-Vue: Safe-T-Vue® is a temperature-sensitive indicator that easily adheres directly to blood bags during refrigeration and temporary storage. It is ideally suited for use by blood banks and transfusion services to maintain quality control in transport and temporary storage of blood products. Safe-T-Vue is proven to improve compliance and preserve valuable blood supplies (AABB Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services, 21 CFR 600.15(a)).

Safe-T-Vue changes color from white to red when the blood (or other temperature sensitive products) has reached or exceeded the indication temperature. Safe-T-Vue is available in 10°C and 6°C indication temperatures. Because it is irreversible, Safe-T-Vue will indicate that a higher temperature condition existed, even if the temperature returns to a lower level. As long as the indicator remains white, blood may be reissued.
