From 2000 to 2003, a terrifying shadow loomed over rural China. Entire families were found brutally murdered in their homes—bludgeoned with hammers, axes, or shovels as they slept. The man behind this horror was Yang Xinhai, later dubbed the “Monster Killer.” Over the course of three years, Yang committed 67 murders and 23 rapes, making him the most prolific serial killer in modern Chinese history.

Born into poverty in Henan Province in 1968, Yang grew up withdrawn, isolated, and deeply disconnected from society. After dropping out of school, he began drifting across the country, taking low-paying jobs and sleeping in alleys or train stations. Over time, he developed a profound hatred for society—blaming it for his failures and misfortunes.

His crimes were cold, calculated, and devastating. He would target remote villages, break into homes at night, and kill everyone inside—often raping the women before or after murdering them. He didn’t know his victims. He didn’t rob them. He simply killed—because, as he later confessed, he felt nothing.

Yang managed to stay under the radar for years by constantly moving between provinces and using fake names. But in November 2003, he was arrested during a routine police check. When investigators linked him to multiple murders, he calmly confessed to all of them—without remorse.

In 2004, he was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad.
