Attorneys in the case of Carlos Reales Dominguez are back in court to decide whether they will pursue a retrial on unresolved charges stemming from a string of stabbings in Davis in 2023.

Dominguez, now 23, was a former UC Davis student and was previously acquitted of first-degree murder in the deaths of David Breaux, 50, and Karim Abou Najm, 20, and cannot be retried on those charges. However, jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision on the remaining charges: second-degree murder, attempted murder, and involuntary manslaughter on Kimberlee Guillory, 64.

The deadlock led to a mistrial in June, 2025 after deliberating for nine days across 3 weeks. According to the jury foreperson, further deliberation was unlikely to break the impasse.

The jury foreperson told the judge the jury had been deadlocked 10-2 for about a week on charges of second-degree murder, with 10 jurors believing he was not guilty and they didn't get to involuntary manslaughter. The jurors each independently confirmed they did not think further deliberations would yield a different result.

The split votes on the unresolved charges were as follows:
Second-degree murder of David Breaux: 10 jurors voted not guilty; 2 voted guilty
Second-degree murder of Karim Abou Najm: 9 not guilty; 3 guilty
Attempted murder of Kimberlee Guillory: 8 not guilty; 4 guilty
