STORYLINE:
Indonesia on Saturday sent aid and a search and rescue team to Turkey following a devastating earthquake which has left nearly 24,000 people dead.

Monday's magnitude 7.8 quake and powerful aftershocks cut a swath of destruction that stretched hundreds of kilometers (miles) across southeastern Turkey and neighbouring Syria.

An urban search and rescue team, or USAR, made up of 62 personnel from the National Search and Rescue Agency and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency flew out from Indonesia's Halim Perdana Kusuma Airbase on Saturday morning along with five tons of aid.

The supplies included food, blankets, winter clothing, tents and solar-powered lamps, as well as K-9 sniffer dogs.

Minister of Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, said this was the first of three planes of aid to be sent by the Indonesian government.

A separate team of 90 health workers from the health ministry, the Indonesian National Armed Forces and the National Police, as well as humanitarian organizations, would be deployed to Turkey on Monday where the team was expected to set up an emergency hospital, Effendy added.

The Indonesian Embassy in Ankara announced on Wednesday that it had evacuated 120 Indonesians, along with two Malaysians and a Myanmar national, from the five hardest-hit regions in Turkey.

The embassy also reported that two Indonesian nationals had been killed in the disaster.

The Turkish Embassy in Jakarta had earlier sent a "most urgent" letter to Indonesian authorities requesting medical and rescue teams.

Jakarta responded shortly by sending its "first batch of aid", in the form of nonperishable food items.
