How do you go from being an average IB kid to an elite student with all 6s and 7s?
There’s no single cheat code to get a 40 plus mark in IB. But each of the 10 tips revealed in this video are the proven strategies of successful past students of mine.
(title: Mr.Jordan) I’ve been an IB English and language teacher for over 15 years. And I have seen students go from 4s to 6s in a single semester. I’ve had students accepted to Ivy League schools, NYU and Cal Berkeley. A few of my best students even got scholarship offers of over a hundred thousand dollars at Michigan and Ohio State.
But before I tell you their tips for success, I have to ask: are you ready to up your study habits and go from average to elite at IB?
The problem with most students have while studying are no focus, tons of distractions and zero motivation.
Most students say they are studying 5-10 hours for an exam. That might even be true.
But what if your time is unfocused and you’re distracted, tired or unmotivated.
What’s the point?
All the data shows that you will not remember anything.
Students have very little time. I’m sure you can relate with your busy schedules.
The last thing you can afford is to be wasting time.
So let’s get right to the solution. Here are my 10 studying strategies and tips for going from average to an elite IB student.
**#10 Structured Review Sessions**:
Break down your study material into manageable sections.
Teachers call this chunking. Take each topic or chapter, and pull out the key concepts and vocabulary. Scan the lecture notes or text book, rereading only the headlines and titles. Then schedule regular review sessions. But make sure you review sessions are only 20-25 minutes. And do not let yourself go over time or get bogged down in details.
**#9 Active Recall**:
Test yourself frequently on the material you have already studied to enhance memory retention. You can use cue cards, or get AI to make lists of key topics for every subject. This is a great activity to share with a friend, in person or online. Have them name the topic, concept or case study. Then you explain and teach it back to them in your own words. Again do not waste time. Keep your sessions under half an hour.
**#8 Spaced Repetition**:
Use spaced repetition software to review flashcards of key concepts and facts. There are apps like Duolingo that have this built in, and there are free software apps like ANKI you can download. I have a checklist and cue card template which you can download for FREE linked below. You can also use AI chats to write up custom card decks for ANKI. This is a proven scientific method. So trust the algorithm and keep your sessions short but frequent.
**#7 Interleaved Practice**:
Mix different subjects or topics while studying to improve your ability to differentiate between concepts. This is a great strategy for breaking up longer study sessions, especially over the holidays. And it is really helpful for students struggling to focus or stay on topic. But make sure you are scheduling each topic at a set time, with a beginning and an end. During that time, no distractions, no notifications, and no new windows on your computer.
**#6 Time Management**: This is a follow up to interleaved practise. You have to make yourself a study schedule and understand the basics of time management. There is just way to much happening with 6 courses, CAS, TOK and the extended essay. You will get lost, overwhelmed and burnt out if you don’t have a plan and strategy to efficiently manage your time. Allocate specific time blocks for each subject and stick to a consistent study routine.
Watch to the end for all 10 tips in this IB Study Guide will prepare you to get a level 7 on your Predicted grades, Individual Oral, examinations and internal assessment with the help of a certified IB DP teacher of IB Language B.
