Actor M. E. Clifton James was recruited to play a convincing “Monty” in Operation Copperhead, a secret Allied deception plan. In the months before D-Day, the fake Montgomery was deliberately seen touring Gibraltar and North Africa, where German spies were known to operate.

The goal was simple but brilliant:
If Montgomery was in the Mediterranean, then the Allies must be planning an invasion from the south—not Normandy.

Meanwhile, the real Montgomery stayed hidden in England, preparing the largest amphibious invasion in history. German intelligence took the bait, helping reinforce the illusion that Normandy was a diversion.

This carefully staged performance became part of the wider Allied deception effort that kept German forces divided and uncertain—buying the Allies priceless time and surprise on June 6, 1944.
