A fractured Republican party showed few signs of mending itself this week, after House Speaker Paul Ryan announced he's not ready to back GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump.
AP political reporter Steve Peoples said Ryan's decision to hold off on supporting Trump "sent shockwaves through the party" and ensures there will be "a very public rift" at a time when the party was hoping to unite.
Peoples said Ryan made the surprise statement Thursday because he believes Trump "could be an electoral disaster this Fall" and cause vulnerable House and Senate Republicans to lose their seats.
He said the House Speaker is making a "calculated risk" that the idea of a Trump presidency, at least at this stage, is potentially more damaging than a party battle over his candidacy.
