Most things you don’t want to happen occur when you are not ready.
Most people can be ready for things when they are out doing activities like play, park time, or walks but get caught off guard when there is down time.
This is where people start to get demand barking from their dog, Chewing on furniture , pee or poop accidents in the house, barking at windows or what ever is behind the door.
Some folks give their dog snuffle mats, or countless toys on the ground so their dog can entertain themselves but from my experience those self satisfying activities are the opposite of productive and just create dogs that need constant stimulation.
In reality your dog needs to learn to be bored. Learn to do nothing. Of course your dog may wonder around, chill with you, or you might give them something to chew on or toss out a toy so they can entertain them selves for a short bit to help break up the time but Those are not a replacement for learning to do nothing but rather supplemental.
The bottom line is those off hours of the day are a valuable piece to training. It is where boundaries are found. What rules are in place. What the expectations are when there is nothing to do.
