(24 Oct 2019) Scores of people gathered at Madrid's Puerta del Sol square on Thursday to celebrate the exhumation of Spain's late dictator Gen. Francisco Franco.
Earlier on Thursday, Spain turned a momentous page in its history by exhuming Franco's remains from his grandiose mausoleum outside Madrid, reburying them in a small family crypt north of the capital.
The government-ordered, closed-door operation satisfies a decades-old desire of many in Spain who considered the vainglorious mausoleum that Franco built an affront to the tens of thousands who died in Spain's Civil War.
In Madrid, Anti-Franco activists and others paying tribute to those who died under Franco's reign, turned up to celebrate by dancing and chanting - sharing glasses of cava and cake.
"We're celebrating that a fascist is no longer going to be paid homage to in a public space," said teacher Jose Enrique Garcia.
"But it's only one more step by the government. We must still fight for justice and reparations to the victims of Franco," he added.
