An understanding of ideological foundations is essential to examining Middle East politics today. While regional similarities and common themes exist, unique psychological, emotional, historical, and religious perspectives shape the conflicts in each country. This talk will explore how these perspectives and events shape policy in Middle Eastern states today, including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Tunisia, Morocco, and Libya. Finally, it will conclude with a discussion on the role of the U.S. and its efforts to shape or, at a minimum influence, the new orders in these countries both now and in the years to come.

About This Speaker:
Dr. Alon Ben Meir is currently a Negotiator at Track II Diplomacy, where he is involved in negotiations aimed at achieving greater peace and prosperity in the Middle East and operates as a liaison between top Middle Eastern and European officials. He is also Host and Organizer of Global Leaders: Conversations with Alon Ben-Meir, where he brings distinguished heads of state, ambassadors, policy makers and influential world leaders together to discuss critical issues facing the international community. This Fall, 2013, he is teaching a seminar at NYU entitled, The Middle East: Foundations and Emerging Orders. Dr. Meir holds a PhD in International Relations, and a Masters in Philosophy both from Queen's College at Oxford.
