Y reg Lowlander 7443 seen here doing very well for her age. Unlike pretty much every other Arriva bus throughout the UK of a similar age these Lowlanders are still in fact in original specification. Only a very lucky few received a rather rushed and shoddy respray into what is now recognised as Arriva's interurban livery. But the vast majority of these Lowlanders at least have never seen a respray since new, still occupying their original seat moquette on the infamously uncomfortable Urban90's and also haven't received any kind of mechanical overhaul in all their years of service. However these buses are now a money pit, although they have paid for themselves over the years (especially considering the lack of investment in their maintenance) they are in fact and rather unsurprisingly becoming more difficult to keep on the roads. Rotten chassis for example due to the prolonged stay at Ashington depot and all the salt air means the chassis are effectively dust. Finding parts for them is also becoming a bit harder but also a lot more expensive as more and more parts are finding themselves in need of replacement. It seems that Arriva head office is not willing to throw any more money into these old girls, mainly because of how much is being spent on them currently but also because of reasons they'd rather we didn't know. For example it makes good sense to keep these old girls out long as possible, whilst looking as tatty as possible. As this will attract customers to the premium Sapphire and MAX branded routes, and thus increasing their prestige even more.
