HTSE-1200: Hindustan Turbo Shaft Engine 1200

A turboshaft engine is a form of gas turbine that is optimized to produce shaft power rather than jet thrust. In concept, they are very similar to turbojets, with additional turbine expansion to extract heat energy from the exhaust and convert it into output shaft power. Turboshaft engines are commonly used in applications that require a sustained high-power output, high reliability, small size, and light weight.

HTSE-1200 or Hindustan Turbo Shaft Engine 1200 is a turboshaft engine under development by HAL. The 1200KW Turbo shaft engine would be used as power plant for 3 to 6-ton category helicopters.

HTSE-1200: Requirement

Looking at the present and future requirements of Indian Armed forces, close to 5000 to 6000 engines would be required in coming years. The HALs helicopters such as ALH Dhruv and LCH are powered by the Shakti engine which has been co-developed by HAL and France's Safran with limited technology transfer. Therefore, the development of HTSE-1200 will make India completely self-reliant in the engine development for Helicopters. One HTSE-1200 engine can power a 3-ton class of helicopter and twin engine 5–6-ton helicopters.

HTSE-1200: Development

The first run of engine was conducted in February 2018 when it achieved 76% of the rpm required. There have been 250 tests of engine since inaugural run. Back in April this 2021, DMRL has also supplied the 1st set of single crystal blades to HAL for HTSE-1200 engine. Each set has 60 blades, a total of 5 sets were ordered. Single crystal blades were first developed for the Kaveri project. HTSE-1200 & HTFE-25 engines share their cores, blades & other critical technologies. HAL Engine Division at Koraput in association with Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) has developed Single Crystal Blade samples.

As of now, one technology demonstrator of HTSE-1200 engine was built and is presently under testing. The core of the engine has achieved 100% speed run. Sea level trials of core engine completed successfully. High altitude cold weather and High altitude hot weather trials of Jet Mode Engine is complete. HAL was expected to start limited series production of engine from 2021 end, which will be for 5 units for further testing.
