Phantasy Star IV Purgatory is a hack created by The Komrade. Compared to the Hell Mode hack, Purgatory makes all enemies immune to all negative status effects, including instant death. In return, characters with useless skills affected by Purgatory's changes get new skills to replace them. On top of all this, some skills and equipment got buffed. Most importantly though, the enemy difficulty gets a massive boost.

I'm playing on the version of the Purgatory hack which doubles EXP & Meseta gained from battle to help reduce the time I need to spend grinding when it is needed.

You can head over to romhacking.net and do a quick search to download whichever version of the hack you wish to play. ROM file will need to be found on your own though.

If you couldn't guess already, this boss fight is BRUTAL. Zio & Dark Force 1? Mere child's play compared to this nightmare boss fight. Me being about 10-12 levels lower than I should be for this boss doesn't help things either (Mostly because I was lazy to go and grind at the time, go me!).

Basically, Dark Force 2 only has three moves which are Shadow Breath, Lightning Shower, and Evil Eye. Evil Eye is by far the least threatening thing it does because you do not take any damage whatsoever.

Lightning Shower? With buffs up, Wren loses about 80-90% of his max HP at this level, Chaz & Rika about 50% or so each, Rune a bit less, Kyra maybe 40% or so.

Shadow Breath? If your name is not Wren or Kyra, you are 95% guaranteed to go down in one hit, even from full HP and with all buffs in place.

If that wasn't bad enough, Dark Force 2 has a metric crapload of HP. You'll likely burn through every chance you can take to use Grand Cross & Double Slash and STILL the beast won't die.

If you have any Star Dews/Moon Dews/Sol Dews, do not hold back whatsoever in using them if the situation calls for it. You're going to need every last advantage you can get to win.

I am absolutely stunned that I got this fight on my 2nd attempt, especially when Rika & Kyra had no TP left to heal the party up with quite a bit left to the fight yet.

If it wasn't made quite clear...yes, I did die on this boss and you'll see why after the boss goes down. I tossed in a short clip showing just what happens when the boss activates "KILL!" mode at the wrong time (this fail occured roughly 8-9 minutes into the battle).
