SME Reimagined: Challenging the Order in Entrepreneurship, Institutions and Sustainability

Entrepreneurship is the driving force of development, but entrepreneurship is not equally common everywhere, nor is it always sustainable. Institutions that promote entrepreneurial product and process innovation include the rule of law and flexible land, labour, and capital markets.

More often than not, cities serve as hotbeds of all types of entrepreneurships, including the creation of SMEs. People in dense environments tend to be more creative and productive than elsewhere, due to knowledge spillovers that are channelled through social networks or unexpected encounters.

Such entrepreneurship is likely to be compatible with sustainability if three key features are present: sustainable profitability through continuous innovation (economic sustainability), use of durable inputs (environmental sustainability), and intra-firm population diversity (social sustainability). This livecast is coinciding with World Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day.
