While monitoring a pod of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins in Swartvlei Bay in the Garden Route, an adult was seen swimming with a new born dolphin. The dolphin calf did not appear to be responsive and the mother dolphin was supporting it on her pectoral fins as she swam behind the rest of the pod.
Her behaviour was interesting in that she dived frequently and spent most of the time under water which is contrary to what would be expected with a new born dolphin. Usual behaviour would be to remain at the surface and for the mother to support the baby so that it could breathe.
Her time under water with the baby, and the apparent lack of swimming movement from the calf suggests that there was something wrong with the baby.
