Sinaloa cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has pleaded guilty in a US federal court, marking a major development in the fight against international drug trafficking.

El Mayo, once one of the most powerful drug lords in the world, admitted to leading a decades-long criminal enterprise responsible for trafficking over 1.5 million kilograms of cocaine and large quantities of heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl into the United States.

The plea deal follows his July 2024 arrest, when he was detained after a small aircraft carrying him and El Chapo’s son landed on U.S. soil.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi and officials from the Eastern District of New York confirmed El Mayo's guilty plea removes the last major figure of the original Sinaloa cartel leadership. He now faces life imprisonment without parole, with 16 federal indictments brought against him over two decades.

His confession includes bribery of public officials in Mexico, protection of drug routes, and brutal violence to maintain power, underscoring the far-reaching impact of cartel operations.

This case represents a key win for US federal authorities in curbing transnational drug networks.
