Hi, Erin with ExaVault here. There are lots of flavors and variations of the file transfer protocol. We're going to go over the differences between SFTP and FTPS.

SFTP encrypts both commands and data while in transmission. It's built on SSH, which is a secure protocol that allows you to remotely connect to other systems and execute commands from the command line. SFTP is a packet-based protocol, which gives the protocol considerable flexibility over FTPS. It supports many different encryption ciphers, as well as host key verification and passwordless logins with SSH keys.

FTPS is also known as FTP-SSL is a more secure form of FTP. FTPS is basic FTP with security added to commands and data transfer. It uses exactly the same command structure as FTP, but commands are simply encrypted.

For example, SFTP uses only one port, so it's easy to use behind a firewall and the connection is constantly protected. SFTP has more options and can perform more file operations.

FTPS however, works in operating systems and legacy systems that have FTP support but can't utilize SFTP.

So which protocol do you use? Both SFTP and FTPs provide a high level of protection. The biggest difference between these two protocols is how connections are authenticated and managed. Generally, we recommend SFTP over FTPS if you have the option for both, but either will work to keep your data secure.
