STORY below: update- 5/11- Sorry volume is so low - for the editing program I had at this time, it was the highest it would go without sounding bad. Also the HQ left after one of YT's updates (sigh- oh, well. :)) Dedicated to corruptforchess :) ...For contest holder and anyone else who's never seen movie- it's the story of a deformed composer genius who lives 5 levels beneath the opera house and falls in love with his voice student (Christine) of 3 years- the only person to whom he reveals his presence. Ever since she was a child at the ballet school there- and now a dancer in the chorus- she has believed him to be her "Angel of Music" who sang to her through the walls. On the night of her operatic debut, he comes to her in the mirror- a doorway to his world.
Once she learns he's a man, she's attracted to him and he woos her (also sends her single red roses tied with a black ribbon), but jealousy, hurt and revenge threaten their relationship- and the Phantom, as he's known (because he communicates his demands with the managers through wry notes, calls himself Opera Ghost, wears a mask, etc), wreaks havoc on the opera house - first, by removing the lead singer in an "accident" in order that Christine may star in the opera, also strangling one of the curious stagehands who saw him do something and tries to find him up in the rafters. This scares her and she turns to Raoul (the other man in the love triangle).
At a masquerade ball, for the first time ever, the Phantom makes his presence known to everyone- allowing them to see him- also ordering that they perform his opera and Christine sing the lead. Later, the Phantom seeks revenge on opening night of his own opera (Don Juan), kills the male lead and unexpectedly appears onstage in his place, opposite Christine- to seek vengeance on all who opposed him. The Phantom proposes to Christine mid-opera, also pleading for her help to save him from his solitude, and she removes his mask - shocking the audience. The Phantom brings down the chandelier, escapes the soldiers sent to kill him (by Raoul) through one of his many trapdoors with Christine, and takes her to his lair to become his bride. He believes it's his face that comes between them - for which he's been ridiculed, abused, and hunted for all his life-, but she lets him know that isn't the true deterrent.
Raoul shows up, Erik (the Phantom) threatens to kill him and demands of her that she make a choice between them- then she does something that stuns the Phantom and because of his love for her, he releases her before the murdering mob can get there, not wanting to see he hurt, ordering her to go and forget him. But she returns, giving him her ring (a symbolic key to her heart, which at masquerade ball he had ripped from the chain around her neck, telling her "you belong to me!"). She leaves with Raoul before mob can get there, and with one final plea...
(Being an E/C lover- Erik {Phantom} Christine- or "Erine", as they're known - I changed things a bit from how movie showed it, at the very end, to reflect my preference, (though I never have believed R/C ended up together as a couple... ;-) )
