Propagating Aloe vera (using chinensis as an example.)

Stem tissue is necessary, so you need a whole pup or a stem cutting..not leaves! I know there are tons of pages and videos everywhere that show the leaves being cut up in one way or another, but if you pay close attention to them they don’t show real results. Because they can’t! They are just posting nonsense about a popular plant to get views, that’s it. Don’t fall for it.

Gently pull the pup you want out of the soil…you can dig around it a little to loosen it up, or pull up the whole pot and separate as many as you want. Alternatively you can cut the pup..roots are not necessary, but they do help the pup after separation. As long as you get the whole pup and not just leaves. Some species like arborescens tend to grow pups on their stem without roots, too.

Sometimes you’ll see videos of “leaf” propagation that look like pics 4 or 5…this is a possible way to propagate Aloes, but it is a stem cutting. The necessary tissue is in the stem the leaf is attached to, the leaves are irrelevant. Pic 4 would be easier to get new growth from than pic 5, and I don’t really see the point in this kind of propagating…why cut them up? Just separate the pups as they are 🤷‍♀️

Unless you are doing this with a solitary species that doesn’t usually make offsets unless damaged, but it’s really not necessary with either Aloe vera or the “chinensis” variety, they are both very prolific. If your Aloe vera isn’t making pups, something isn’t right in your care routine…chinensis will make pups even in less than ideal conditions, it’s VERY prolific, even as an immature plant. “true” vera likes to mature a little before it really starts filling the pot with offsets.
